Two Burnaby students were recently honoured for their essay writing skills.

The Burnaby RCMP's school liaison unit recently put on an essay writing contest and the two winners were Benton Wong, who wrote about his volunteerism and desire to serve his community and how that helped him decide on a career, and Jason Nib, who wrote about community and the challenges facing many British Columbians who live in poverty.

On June 28, Burnaby RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Critchley, along with Burnaby MLAs Kathy Corrigan and Raj Chouhan, held a ceremony to honour Nib and Wong.

"I'm happy to be able to honour these two fine young men and their achievements," Critchley said in a press release. "I found their essays insightful and very well-written. Our future is our youth, and these two young men have promising futures ahead of them. They are both on the path to becoming leaders and I am confident our communities will benefit from having both of them in positions of influence."

Wong has been accepted into the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ont. and hopes to become a flight crew navigator and weapons officer. Nib has expressed a desire to work in the civil service and plans to eventually enter politics and serve the country as an elected representative.
