Homeless, injured and abused animals will now get the care and treatment they need thanks to a Burnaby veterinarian’s donation.

Earlier this month, Claudia Richter transferred ownership of the Burnaby Veterinary Hospital to the B.C. SPCA, making it the second vet clinic in the Lower Mainland operated by the provincial humane society.

“When I purchased Burnaby Veterinary Hospital in late 2010, I had four goals – to modernize the hospital, to achieve a gold standard of care for animals, to create a socially responsible business by giving back to the SPCA and to create a positive work environment for my staff,” Richter said in a press release.

For the past four years, the Burnaby vet has donated her time for Vets in Action, a one-day blitz that provides free care for abandoned or homeless animals. The animals are brought in by the Burnaby SPCA and Richter and her team of vets, technicians and assistants go to work spaying and neutering the animals and providing dental care as well. For her work, Richter was named the B.C. SPCA’s 2013 Veterinarian of the Year.

The next logical step forward would be to focus her care on both her clients’ pets and the animals at the SPCA, she said in the release.

“It quickly became clear to me that the path forward was to donate the clinic to the B.C. SPCA so that, together, we could offer a high standard of care for clients and their pets, as well as ensuring (the hospital’s) mandate of supporting the community’s animals in need continued,” she added.

The Burnaby Veterinary Hospital will continue to serve private clients and their pets along with animals at the SPCA. The B.C. SPCA operates several other animal hospitals across the province as well as spay and neuter clinics in Prince George and Kamloops.

The Burnaby Veterinary Hospital is at 2210 Springer Ave. For more info, check out burnabyvet.com.
