Fairies gather at Burnaby Lake for nature house opening

Come Fairies, take me out of this dull world, for I would ride with you upon the wind and dance upon the mountains like a flame, W.B. Yeats. Hundreds came out to the woods wearing their wings and searching for fairies at Burnaby Lake on Saturday.

Metro Vancouver hosted the seasonal opening for the Burnaby Lake Park Nature House with a special Forest Fairy Gathering.

“It went really well. I couldn’t believe how busy we were, and (it was) a good turnout of both boys and girls,” said Irene Lau, a volunteer with the Burnaby Lake Park Association.

Children came dressed in costume, had their faces painted and built fairy and gnome homes out of sticks and pinecones. Metro Vancouver parks interpreters, which operate the nature house, helped introduce the children to the forest.

The nature house is at 4519 Piper Ave. and is open weekends and holidays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Sept. 7. The house hosts children’s activities throughout the summer. For more information, go to www.metrovancouver.org and search for Burnaby Lake Nature House.
