  1. Go shopping at Art from the Attic on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Scandinavian Centre in Burnaby. The show, which features more than 1,500 pieces for sale, is a fundraiser for the Burnaby Gogos, a group of grandmothers dedicated to helping African grandmothers caring for grandchildren orphaned by AIDS. This isn’t a bunch of amateur art, either. There will be pieces from Robert Bateman, Calvin Hunt and George Campbell Tinning, to name a few. The centre is at 6540 Thomas St. Info: www.greatervangogos.org.
  2. Get ready for the Oct. 19 election and attend the all-candidates debate on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Cameron recreation complex, in the Maple Room from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 9523 Cameron St. Kurdish and Iranian groups are organizing and sponsoring the event.
  3. Help the homeless this weekend at Creekside Community Church, which is hosting a special event for World Homeless Day. The church is accepting donations of new or gently used items on Saturday, Oct. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. Items needed include warm blankets, sleeping bags, winter clothes, women’s underwear (all sizes), hotel-sized toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpaste, towels and canned food. The Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness will distribute the donations Oct. 11 to 17. Info: www.burnabyhomelesstaskforce.org.
  4. Get your kids involved in the fine art of chess. The Bob Prittie Metrotown library branch is hosting chess games for children aged six to 12 this Saturday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Curtis Lister, from the Burnaby Junior Chess Club, facilitates the informal drop-in games. If your kids are 10 or under, you must stay in the room. The library branch is at 6100 Willingdon Ave.
  5. Check out the Burnaby Art Gallery exhibition on this weekend, featuring work by Alex Morrison. The show, titled Phantoms of a Utopian Will / Like Most Follies, More Than a Joke and More Than a Whim, investigates counter culture inhabitants in built-environments. The gallery is at 6344 Deer Lake Ave., open noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free, but the suggested donation is $5. Info: www.burnabyartgallery.ca.
