The Wildlife Rescue Association is looking for donations of various items to help injured or orphaned animals.
  1. Consider donating to the Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C., which needs a lot of items to help the injured and orphaned critters in care. The association, based at Burnaby Lake, needs cash donations first and foremost, as well as unscented laundry soap, bleach to clean the centre, and Nitrile gloves. Drop donations off from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, at 5216 Glencarin Dr.
  2. Help Syrian refugees feel more at home this weekend by donating much-needed items on Sunday, Dec. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Burnaby Christmas Bureau’s toy room, at 7252 Kinsgway. Burnaby Community Connections is teaming up with MOSAIC and the Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table to collect new household items for the government-assisted refugees arriving in Canada. Items include: laundry and dish soap, dish towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, all kinds of towels, bath mats, toothbrushes, toothpaste, light bulbs, dish racks, clocks, hairbrushes, soap, shampoo, hangers and more. Gift cards for Superstore and Walmart are also welcome. Organizers don’t want food, clothing or toy donations just yet, as they don’t yet have enough details about the families arriving.
  3. Go skating with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 19, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre. Regular admission rates apply, and there will be crafts and games. The centre is at 3676 Kensington Ave. Info: 604-297-4521.
  4. Watch the Grandview Steelers junior B hockey team face off against the Richmond Sockeyes on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 4 p.m. at the Burnaby Winter Club, at 4990 Canada Way. The local team has won four out of five games this December. They are second in their conference within the Pacific Junior Hockey League.
  5. Take the kids to Cameron library branch for some crafts with paper this Sunday, Dec. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. The session is for children aged four to 12. Caregivers must accompany children 10 and under. The Cameron branch is at 9523 Cameron St.
