Every parent wants their child to have a healthy start in life, but it can be overwhelming to know where to start.

The North Burnaby Healthy Preschoolers’ Fair can help.

The fair is set for Tuesday, March 7 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Cameron Recreation Centre, 9523 Cameron St.

Children can enjoy active play, crafts, storytime and other fun activities. Parents can have their children checked by community health nurses and consult about nutrition, dental health, child development, immunizations, vision and hearing. Local agencies will also be on hand to offer information and referrals.

Parents and kids can also enjoy a snack room.

The free fair – yes, everything is free, even the snacks – is in its 14th year serving families in North Burnaby and Coquitlam, and every year about 200 people attend.

The fair is offered by School District 41, Fraser Health, the city’s parks and recreation services, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and Burnaby North Community Association.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE CLINIC

For parents with particular concerns about speech and language development, here’s another event that might help.

The Tommy Douglas branch of Burnaby Public Library (7311 Kingsway) is offering two upcoming drop-in clinics with a speech-language pathologist. It’s aimed at preschool-aged kids (up to age five) whose parents have concerns about their speech, language skills, stuttering or ability to hear and/or understand language.

In a five- to 10-minute session, the child will receive a brief screening and the pathologist will offer advice to parents. The clinic is designed for children who haven’t yet been referred and is best suited to parents who are wondering whether a referral is needed.

Clients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

The first session is set for Monday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. There’s also a session on Monday, April 3, also from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. For information, call 604-918-7663.
