SuperWalk coming to Burnaby

Annual walk raises money to help people with Parkinson's

Burnaby’s annual Parkinson SuperWalk is coming up on Monday, Sept. 12, but it’s not too early to start collecting pledges. Participants gather donations and then walk around the track at Confederation Park on Monday, Sept. 12. Registration starts at 1:30 p.m., and the walk begins at 2 p.m. Money raised goes to the Parkinson Society of B.C., which invests in research and programs for people with Parkinson’s disease, a debilitating neurological disorder for which there is no cure. For more information on the Burnaby walk, call Linda at 604-298-2983.

Heart jumpstart donation

Kudos to the Pacific Blue Cross team that participated in the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike event in Burnaby. Last year, the employee group won a Spirit Award from the foundation, and the prize is a donation to the charity of their choice. The Pacific Blue Cross workers chose to send a life-saving automated external defibrillator to the West Chilcotin Search and Rescue in B.C.’s Cariboo Regional District. The defibrillator was presented in late July. The Pacific Blue Cross workers – with support from their union, CUPE Local 1816 – have raised more than $45,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Bumble bee count

Want to help scientists save bees? The Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count runs until Aug. 15 across the country. All you have to do is snap a picture of a bumble bee, note the date and location, and upload the details and picture online at bumblebeewatch.org, using the project code “Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count.”

Friends of the Earth, a Canadian environmental group, organized the count to help scientists figure out where bees need protection. As pollinators, bees are crucial for healthy ecosystems, and some species are already endangered. For more information on the project, go to foecanada.org.

Library construction

The Cameron library branch will be closed for renovations from Aug. 27 to Sept. 11, but fear not. There will be fun, free activities in the park and a pop-up library in the building’s upper east parking lot. Patrons can still place holds on books, pick up titles and return library materials at the pop-up library. On Saturday, Aug. 27, there will be a free birdwatching lesson from 9 to 11 a.m. On Wednesday, Aug. 31, there’s a free yoga session from 6 to 6:45 – just bring your own mat. On Thursday, Sept. 1, there’s a Harry Potter scavenger hunt, followed by a Quidditch lesson, from 2 to 4 p.m. This event is for kids five and older. On Sept. 3, there’s a free sketching session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. To register, go to the events section at bpl.bc.ca or call the library at 604-421-5454. Internet and phone services will be down during the closure, so register before renovations start.
