You’re in luck. This weekend’s forecast calls for sun and highs of 28 C. Slap on some sunscreen, get outside and enjoy some of the fun things happening around Burnaby this weekend.

Get into music with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s annual free outdoor concert on Sunday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m. Bring a blanket and lawn chair for a memorable night of classical music with Gordon Gerrard as conductor. There will be popular classics, such as Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, John Williams’ Raiders of the Lost Ark: March (which you may recall from the Indiana Jones films) and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Seventeen-year-old Lucy Wang will be the featured soloist, keeping in the concert’s tradition of highlighting young, up-and-coming musicians. The concert is at Deer Lake Park, in the field behind the Shadbolt Centre.

Get outside for some social exercise. The local Volkssport Club is hosting a five- or 10-kilometre walk through Burnaby’s Central Park on Sunday, July 13, and the stroll is free for new participants. This is not a competitive walk. For more information, call Verni at 604-682-8390.

Swing by the Special Olympics garage sale, on Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. at 7741 Wedgewood St.  All of the proceeds go towards buying sports equipment for the Burnaby Special Olympics athletes, so you know you are helping a good cause while hunting for garage sale treasures.

Check out the Tin Can Studio, a vintage mobile home that’s been converted into a moveable art studio by Vancouver artists Caroline Ballhorn and Jenny Lee Craig. The Tin Can Studio, which puts on art workshops, will be in Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park till Sept. 1. On Sunday, July 13, the studio has a special activity planned for the VSO concert in the park.

Check out some of the best rugby players in the region at the upcoming Lighthouse Sevens tournament all day on Saturday. The tourney takes place in the eastside fields at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex East. There will be players in social and elite divisions (for both men and women), competing for cash prizes.
