Art lovers are invited to Deer Lake Gallery next weekend for the opening of the first exhibition of 2018.

An opening reception is set for noon on Saturday, Jan. 13 to unveil Bodies of Salt, a solo show by artist Amanda Smart.

Smart grew up on the Sunshine Coast, where she first discovered her love of painting and nature. After travelling and living in South America, she moved back to Vancouver, where she attended Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

Smart works primarily in traditional oils and has developed a realistically inclined style with “hints of dreaminess and ethereality,” as a press release notes.

“Amanda aims to explore our natural surroundings while at the same time composing comparisons to our own experiences and conditions as humans,” the release says. “Amanda hopes to continue to use her commitment to her painting as a way to study, learn and explore where we live and our relationships to that.”

Deer Lake Gallery is at 6584 Deer Lake Ave. The gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., with free admission and parking. For information, call 604-298-7322 or see www.burnabyartscouncil.org.
