Joseph and his dreamcoat return to Burnaby

Align Entertainment brings back last year's hit show, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, to the Michael J. Fox Theatre stage

A favourite family musical is returning to the stage in Burnaby in November.

Align Entertainment is remounting its hit show from last year, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, for another run at the Michael J. Fox Theatre from Nov. 3 to 18.

The hit musical, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is back by popular demand after its initial run proved to be a big hit with local audiences.

The show, for those unfamiliar with it, is set in ancient Egypt and based on the biblical story of Joseph and his 11 brothers, following the hero’s rags-to-riches journey – and, of course, his coat of many colours. Webber’s music – including such familiar and singable tunes as Close Every Door and Go Go Go Joseph - runs the gamut of styles, from jazz to western to Elvis Presley-style rock’n’roll, and the performers are backed by a full live orchestra.

The show is directed by Chad Matchette, with musical director Kevin Michael Cripps and choreographer Melissa Turpin.

As with all Align Entertainment productions, the show is promising “Broadway quality entertainment at an affordable price for all ages.”

The cast is packed full of emerging professional performers from the region, many of whom have graduated from Capilano University’s musical theatre program.

It features the stars from the original production, powered by Stuart Barkley as Joseph and Katie-Rose Connors as the Narrator. Barkley has been seen on numerous stages in the region, including three summers at Theatre Under The Stars and as Enjolras in the Arts Club Theatre production of Les Misérables.

They’re joined by fellow returning actors Justin Lapena as Pharaoh, Robin Sukorokoff as Jacob and Erin Matchette as Mrs. Potiphar, with Brennan Cuff joining the fun as Potiphar.

Other Burnaby performers include Jesse Alvarez, Colton Fyfe and Sherry Freeman.

The production also includes a children’s chorus that joins the onstage action.

“Align Entertainment’s goal is to provide affordable, memorable and high-calibre family-friendly theatre in the Lower Mainland,” a company press release says.
