Lively City: Art auction, singing seniors and (gulp) Christmas crafts

It’s an annual fundraiser for the Nikkei National Museum, and it’s returning on Saturday, June 10. The ninth annual Bloom fundraiser, set to run from 2 to 4:30 p.m., is an afternoon tea party that features a silent art auction.

Do you want to direct a group of senior singers? The Bonsor Singin' Seniors are on the hunt for a new choir director to start in September.

It’s an annual fundraiser for the Nikkei National Museum, and it’s returning on Saturday, June 10.

The ninth annual Bloom fundraiser, set to run from 2 to 4:30 p.m., is an afternoon tea party that features a silent art auction. This year’s event draws its inspiration from the ongoing Kimono Culture exhibition at the museum.

Hosted by Margaret Gallagher, the afternoon will include teas from Silk Road Tea, a Japanese tea ceremony by Maiko Behr, and a variety of treats – plus a dance performance, DJ and wine by Kanazawa wines.

You’ll be able to bid on select artists’ interpretations of kimono and Japanese culture – items will be available for viewing online starting June 4.

Guests are welcome to attend in kimono or Japanese-inspired attire. Guests can be dressed in a woman’s kimono or man’s yukata for $25, by appointment.

Tickets for the event are $25, or $20 for members. The Nikkei National Museum is at 6688 Southoaks Cres. For information or tickets, see www.nikkeiplace.org or call 604-777-7000.

CHOIR DIRECTOR WANTED

Are you a choral conductor looking for a fun new gig?

The Bonsor Singin’ Seniors is searching for a new choral director to start this coming September.

The 35-member choir sings a variety of music in four-part harmony and meets at the Bonsor Recreation Centre. Rehearsals are held Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m., from September to June, and the group performs several concerts at seniors’ care centres in December and again in May and June.

Anyone who can help is invited to contact choir president Christine Leston by email, [email protected], or by phone at 604-516-0277.

DANCE WORKSHOP

Calling all dancers – you may want to save the date now for a special workshop at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts this summer.

Choreographer Alvin Erasga Tolentino will be leading a workshop Aug. 14 to 20 as part of Co. Erasga’s artist in residency work with the arts centre. Billed as a Creation and Performance Lab, the workshop is themed on Dancing the Meaning and Origin of Your Name. It’s set to run Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a public performance on the Sunday. It’s free and it’s open to dancers of all levels, aged 10 and up.

ARTISANS WANTED

Trigger warning for the holiday-sensitive … I’m about to mention the C-word.

Yes, artisans and artists are being called to take part in the 28th annual Knights Christmas Market, set for St. Thomas More Collegiate in Burnaby on Nov. 18 and 19.

“This is a well-attended, pop-up-style Christmas market held in light-filled and airy spaces throughout the school,” a write-up about the show says. “We’re looking for vendors who offer original, vintage upcycled and handmade items and artwork that will appeal to our market visitors.”

In 2016, more than 120 vendors drew more than 3,000 visitors to shop and enjoy a bistro, bake sale, poinsettia sale and more. All new artisans must be juried in to the event.

Check out theknightschristmasmarket.weebly.com for all the details.
