Cultural exchange

A recent artist exchange in Burnaby is going down in the books as a big success.

The Burnaby Artists Guild hosted a recent Art Across the Pacific exchange with 10 artists from Guiyang, China – the second half of an exchange that had seen 10 artists from Burnaby make the trek to southwestern China the year before.

The Chinese artists were here from March 31 to April 6, and the two groups held joint exhibitions at the Burnaby Art Gallery and Deer Lake Gallery, as well as painting “en plein air” in some special sessions.

An email from the Burnaby Artists Guild’s Roxsane Tiernan notes that the exchange was a great success.

“Our two distinct cultures mean the give and take has to be mutual,” she writes. “We are learning all the time. This time we shared in the creation of two mosaic murals to be presented to the Burnaby Hospital at a ceremony involving Burnaby city officials and the Chinese consulate. Cross-cultural events such as this strengthen the bond between our two cities and between artists on either side of the Pacific.”

Tiernan offered her thanks to a host of groups and people who made the exchange happen, including the cities of Burnaby and Guiyang, the Burnaby Artists Guild, Burnaby Arts Council, Burnaby Art Gallery, Deer Lake Gallery and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

Businesses including Opus Framing and Art Supplies and Lions Gate Road Publishing also lent assistance, as did Tourism Vancouver, Guizhou Canadian Fellowship Association and the Consulate General of China in Vancouver.

Tiernan also offered thanks to Jimmy Shiluck, Qilun Liu (Maoyuan Real Estate Company),Greta Ho, Jack Yang, Yusheng Cheng, Chenglin Jiang, Ryan Gluckmanand all the volunteers who pitched in to help.

Kudos to all involved.
