Video blogging is one of the skills teens can explore at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, where summer arts programming includes a wide range of digital skills alongside more traditional art forms.

Burnaby Neighbourhood House is celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary with an exhibition of work by a local artist.

Patricia Haley-Tsui, a multi-disciplinary artist from North Burnaby, has created a range of pieces for a Canada 150 exhibition that will be open for viewing at the Burnaby Neighbourhood House’s North House for the month of July.

Partial proceeds of all sales will support the Neighbourhood House.

North House is at 4908 Hastings St. The art can be viewed anytime Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For details, call 604-294-5444 or email [email protected] – or just stop in to check out the show anytime in July.

WHERE ART MEETS TECHNOLOGY

Art isn’t just about pencils and paintbrushes. If there’s a creative young mind in your house that’s drawn to technology, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is a great place to explore the world of digital art.

The Shadbolt’s summer programming includes Digital Painting/Video Game Concept Art (barcode 431387), for 10- to 15-year-olds, a course running Monday to Friday starting July 17 (11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily).

There’s also Video Blogging (barcode 432803), for 13- to 17-year-olds, running Monday to Friday starting July 31 (1 to 3 p.m. daily).

Or, for teens with an interest in architecture, why not Architecture and Model Making (barcode 431817), for participants aged 15 to 19? It’s on Tuesday to Friday starting July 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

There’s also a Robotix for Youth class (barcode 431830), for the 10- to 15-year-old set, running Monday to Friday starting July 17 (1 to 3:30 p.m. daily).

Check out the details in the City of Burnaby’s summer arts guide – you can pick one up at city facilities or download at www.shadboltcentre.com. You can also register online at www.burnaby.ca/webreg, using the barcode numbers above.

KIDS AT THE GALLERY

If you have a young artist in your house, Burnaby Art Gallery is the place to be.

The gallery offers a series of week-long art camps for kids over the summer, with each week on a different theme.

As of the writing of this column, spaces were still available in a few of the upcoming options.

The youngest artists can enjoy Wacky World of Art, running Monday to Friday starting July 10, with morning sessions for four- and five-year-olds and afternoon sessions for six- and seven-year-olds.

The following week, starting July 17, nine- to 12-year-olds can enjoy Mixed-Media Marvels, a full-day course running 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. And for the week starting July 24, there’s The Ecology of Art, also for the nine- to 12-year-old set, running 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Check out www.burnabyartgallery.ca to find a summer program brochure for more details, or sign up through www.burnaby.ca/webreg.
