New Exhibit explores layers within art

Japanese culture is the influence for the Burnaby Art Gallery’s next exhibition, coming to the local gallery.

LAYERS: Print & Beyond, which runs from Nov. 20 to Jan. 24, 2016, features works by three artists from the Vancouver area – Gillian Armitage, Kim Mi Hyang and Marie Price. All three women are accomplished artists and printmakers whose work has hung in galleries around the world.

“The artists have been strongly influenced by their time in Japan as lecturers, visiting artists and exhibitors,” notes a press release.

The upcoming Burnaby exhibit has strong ties to Japan, with each artist incorporating traditional Japanese practices into their artwork.

“Armitage is inspired by the story ofSadako Sasaki and her thousand paper cranes,” the release notes.

Price, meanwhile, uses Washi papers, which literally means “Japanese paper” and are made from long inner fibres of three plants.

“The layering of the Washi papers is a physical gesture that mirrors the layering of experience that each human absorbs over their individual lifetimes,” notes the release.

Korean artist Mi Hyang, who divides her time between Vancouver and Seoul, uses Hanji paper, a Korean paper made of mulberry, to create her pieces.

“Mi Hyang creates prints that explore her relationship to the natural world and to her daily experiences through her unique printing process that combines woodcut engraving and paper casting,” the release notes.

The exhibition is being curated by guest curator Susan Gransby, an independent curator, artist, writer and editor who sits on the Burnaby Art Gallery board. Join Gransby, Mi Hyang, Price and Armitage for an opening reception at the Burnaby Art Gallery on Nov. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. The evening includes opening remarks and is open to the public. Admission is free.

The Burnaby Art Gallery, at 6344 Deer Lake Ave., is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information on this exhibit and other happenings at the gallery, visit www.burnabyartgallery.ca.
