Film buffs, be sure to save Sunday afternoon on your calendar.

The Burnaby Public Library is continuing its Six Movies for 60 Years screening series. In celebration of its 60th anniversary, the library has been showing a series of films, one for each decade from the 1950s on up.

This weekend, it’s the last in the series: The Social Network, the 2010 film telling the story of Mark Zuckerberg and the creation of Facebook.

It screens Sunday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Metrotown branch (6100 Willingdon Ave.). It’s free, but space is limited. Tickets will be available 30 minutes before the show.

For information, call 604-436-5410 or see www.bpl.bc.ca/events.

JAZZ JAM

Musicians are invited out to another jam session at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

Jazz musician Cory Weeds is back to host another Jazz Jam on Tuesday, Nov. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Jazz Jams are open to musicians of all ages and abilities, and every night features a lineup of local jazz musicians in an improvised night of music-making.

Bring your own instrument. Admission is free. Call 604-291-6864 for information, or see www.shadboltcentre.com.

WINTER CRAFTS

Here are some fun sessions for the crafty types out there.

Families are invited out to the Cameron branch of Burnaby Public Library (9523 Cameron St.) to take part in a fall Makerspace program on Saturday, Nov. 26.

The 2 p.m. session will give participants a chance to create mini ski slope dioramas.

“No need for googles, toques or snow boots – just bring your creativity!” as the library says in an event write-up. Call 604-421-5454 for information, or sign up at www.bpl.bc.ca/events. Parents must accompany kids under 10.

Also on Saturday, Nov. 26, the McGill branch (4595 Albert St.) is hosting two sessions in winter card making. Both are open by drop-in, with sessions from 1 to 2 p.m. and from 3 to 4 p.m. They’re free, and you don’t need to register, but parents need to accompany kids under 10.

Then, on Sunday, Nov. 27, there’s an adult session in Holiday Cards at the Tommy Douglas branch (7311 Kingsway). The two-hour workshop starts at 2 p.m., and supplies are provided – all you need to do is turn up and use your imagination. It’s free, and you don’t need to register.

Check out www.bpl.bc.ca/events for information on any of the crafting sessions.

OPEN MIKE

Are you a writer? Have you ever had a hankering to share your work in public?

The McGill branch of Burnaby Public Library (4595 Albert St.) is hosting a Writers’ Open Mike night on Monday, Dec. 5 from 6:45 to 8 p.m.

If you want to read, show up at 6:45 p.m. to sign up to share five minutes of your own work – a novel excerpt, a short story, a memoir, a poem or even a song. The only criteria is, it must be original work created by you.

Readings start at 7 p.m., and, if you’re not brave enough to share your own work, you’re still invited to turn out to listen.

Light refreshments will be served after the reading. It’s recommended for ages 14 through adult, and it’s free to all. You don’t need to register; just show up to join in. All welcome.

Call 604-299-8955 or see www.bpl.bc.ca/events for more details.
