Burnaby residents are part of the fun for Gateway Theatre’s holiday show.

The Music Man is onstage at the theatre from Dec. 8 to 31, and three local folks are involved.

Two Burnaby residents are in the cast – Oliver Castillo as Oliver Hix, and Graeme Kitagawa in the ensemble.

Castillo is a recent graduate of the musical theatre and bachelor of performing arts programs at Capilano University. He’s recently been seen in the Arts Club’s Les Misérables and Theatre Under the Stars’ Legally Blonde.

Graeme Kitagawa grew up in Brooks, Alta., and started dancing at age three. In 2015, he moved to Vancouver to train in the intensive program at Harbour Dance Centre, and he’s continuing to train now as a member of the Source Dance Company.

Also from Burnaby is Gerald King, the show’s lighting designer. King is a familiar face in the world of lighting design – his work has been seen with the National Ballet of Canada, the National Arts Centre, Pacific Opera Victoria, Baltimore Opera and many more.

The Music Man stars Jay Hindle and Meghan Gardiner and is directed by Barbara Tomasic.

It’s set to play at the Gateway Theatre, 6500 Gilbert Rd. in Richmond, nightly at 8 p.m. (except Dec. 13, 24, 25 and 27), with matinees on Dec. 10, 11, 18, 26 and 31 at 2 p.m., and Dec. 13 at 1 p.m.

COASTAL SOUND CHRISTMAS CONCERT

’Tis the season for Christmas concerts – and here’s another one you won’t want to miss.

The Coastal Sound Youth Choir is bringing its Christmas concert, See Amid the Winter Snow, to New Westminster Christian Reformed Church on Saturday, Dec. 10.

The choir, with its new conductor, Joel Tranquilla, brings to life a program that includes a wide range of music – from Bach to Lauridsen, Joni Mitchell to Imogen Heap. It will also feature new Canadian music by Jeff Enns, Jason Jestadt and Sarah Quartel.

They’ll be joined by special guest choirs DeCoro – Coastal Sound Music Academy’s adult choir – and the Coastal Sound Children’s Choir.

The concert is set for 7:30 p.m. at the church, 8255 13th Ave., Burnaby.

See www.coastalsoundmusic.com for more on the concert.

SURREALISM AT DEER LAKE GALLERY

Art lovers, don’t forget about the new exhibition at Deer Lake Gallery.

The Burnaby Arts Council is presenting Satirical Pop of Colour, featuring the work of Vicki Lynn Rae and Carla Sumarlidson, at the gallery until Jan. 14.

The exhibition, which opens on Saturday, Dec. 3, is described as “a unique combination of vibrant imagery entrenched in fantasy and remembrance.”

“Sumarlidson’s work is born of her imagination and spontaneously combusted onto the canvas,” a press release says. “They are vividly pictorial and surrealistic, born of life experiences from her 40-year career in the arts in Vancouver.”

Rae’s work explores origination – South American and Canadian aboriginal – “thematically interrelated from memories and a projection of her spirituality,” the release says.

“Her work is a raw self-analysis; it breathes surrealism and is reminiscent of Munch. There is a great deal of symbolism used to render such themes as addiction and recovery.”

Intrigued? Deer Lake Gallery is at 6584 Deer Lake Ave., so stop in to check it out – or see www.burnabyartscouncil.orgor call 604-298-7322 for more.
