SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL

WHAT’S UP?

The Burnaby Arts Council is presenting its third annual Deer Lake Summer Arts Festival on Saturday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s at Deer Lake Gallery, 6584 Deer Lake Ave.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

The festival is a day-long celebration of the arts, with an artisans’ market featuring the work of glass blowers, sculptors, potters, fashion and jewelry designers and more. Live entertainment by the Coastal Wolf Pack Salish song and dance group, and by singer-songwriter Carolyn Neapole, is also on the program. Plus, the festival includes a performance by the arts council’s summer theatre troupe, a workshop for kids, food, and a live art competition, the Park’s Edge Paint-Off.

WHO’S IT FOR?

Everyone. Kids will enjoy getting their hands on an art workshop and taking in an interactive performance by Burnaby Summer Theatre (the shows are always kid-friendly and involve plenty of audience dancing, singing and moving around). Art lovers and painters can take in the fun of the Park’s Edge Paint-Off – and enjoy the kick-off of the arts council’s new exhibition, DiverCity, which will feature the works of artists taking part in the paint-off. Shoppers can browse the many high-quality, handmade selections at the artisans’ market (who knows, you might even get some early Christmas shopping done!).

And everyone can enjoy wandering around in the gallery’s beautiful setting at the edge of Deer Lake Park. It’s a win-win-win all around.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

It’s all free. You don’t need tickets, and you don’t need to sign up ahead. Just swing by Deer Lake Gallery any time on Saturday, July 8 to join in the fun.
