Burnaby's Hindu Temple is hosting a multi-day festival this coming weekend, celebrating the triumph of good over evil.
The celebration is called Shri Durga Puja and also known as Navratri, or "nine nights" in certain regions of India. According to Hindu mythology, Durga is demon-slaying goddess most well-known for killing an evil buffalo demon.
"The whole theme is the power of goodness over evil - that's what we celebrate," said Leena Roy, a member of the temple's congregation.
Anybody can attend the celebration, which runs from Sunday, Oct. 21 to Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 3885 Albert St. The festival features mostly prayers, followed by meals donated by families that attend the temple, and there is devotional singing in the evening. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
