We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. This week, the luck o' the Irish is with us and there are plenty of fun events in the city, including St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Here's our Top 5 for the March 15 to 17 weekend.
Get running in the Green Sock Half relay or the Shamrock 'n Race seven mile or five kilometre runs on Sunday. Participants will be given a pair of souvenir green race socks and a finishing medal. A pancake breakfast is included. Registration is closed online, but those interested can contact the Burnaby Running Room by email at Burnaby@runningroom. com, by phone at 4338711 or in person at 7382 Market Crossing.
Get walking in the Heights. For those who prefer a slower pace to their weekend jaunts, there's the free Healthy on the Heights community walk taking place Saturday at 9: 30 a.m. The walkers meet at the front door of the Eileen Dailly recreation centre and then walk along the Hastings Street corridor, window shopping and getting to know their neighbours. For more information call 604-268-1356.
Get skating at the St. Patrick's Day skate at Bill Copeland Sports Centre, 3676 Kensington Ave. on Sunday from 12: 30 to 3 p.m. The event includes face painting, magical crafts and pot-of-gold games. Regular admission and rental fees are in effect. For more information, call 604-2974521.
Get rocking and celebrate St. Patrick's Day at a local pub. Great Bear Pub at 5665 Kingsway is featuring music, food specials and Irish dancers, and is holding a contest for a one-way trip to Ireland. Or check out your local watering hole to see what celebrations might be underway.
Get out of town for an entirely different rock experience. The Hastings Centre Rockhounds are holding the annual rock and gem show at the Hastings Community Centre, over the border in Vancouver at 3096 East Hastings St. There will be demonstrations, soapstone carving, cabochon making, silversmithing, a silent auction, a spin-and-win wheel, grab bags, items to purchase and refreshments, as well. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Admission is by donation.
