Word lovers, this one's for you. The Burnaby Writers' Society's Spoken Ink reading series is back, and it's happening next on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
The series includes a reading from a featured author, as well as an open mike session.
Daniela Elza is the featured author for the upcoming session. She's the author of Milk Tooth Bane Bone, a book of poetry that "sweeps across the reader's consciousness like a bird's wing," a press release says.
Daniela received her PhD in education from SFU in 2011, and her debut poetry collection, the weight of dew, was published in 2012 by Mother Tongue Publishing.
Spoken Ink takes place at La Fontana Caffe, 101-3701 Hastings St. in North Burnaby. It starts at 8 p.m., with open mike sign-up at 7:30 p.m. The reading series runs on the third Tuesday of each month. For more, check out www.BurnabyWritersNews.blogspot.com or contact email@example.com.
If you can walk, you can dance.
That's the word from the Burnaby International Folk Dancers, who are inviting everyone to check out the world of folk dancing this fall.
The group meets every Tuesday night from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Charles Rummel Centre, 3630 Lozells Ave. in Burnaby. It gives people a chance to learn folk dances from around the world in a friendly club environment.
New dances are taught every night, and all levels are welcome. You don't need a partner, and you can just drop in.
The group is also holding a special World Dance Evening on Tuesday, Sept. 10, with a free evening of folk dancing from around the world. It will give people a sample of various dances from many cultures. Again, everyone is welcome and you don't need a partner.
Call 604-436-9475 for information.
If you're at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts on Saturday, Sept. 28, be sure to keep your eyes open for the Westcoast Harmony Chorus.
The chorus - the 2013 International Harmony Classic champions - will be showcasing their music during a 12-hour sing-athon around the Lower Mainland. Donations will be welcome.
They'll be kicking off the day in Surrey, followed by a couple of stops in Burnaby - at Harmony Court Estates at 10:10 a.m., and at Shadbolt Centre at 11 a.m. They'll move on to River Market in New Westminster for a noon performance, continuing through the afternoon and evening with more singing in Surrey, Delta, Fort Langley and White Rock.
Check out www.westcoastsings.com for more details about the chorus and their sing-a-thon.
