A 19-year-old man is in police custody after Burnaby RCMP members investigated two break-and-enters in the Edmonds area on Wednesday.

The first incident occurred around 8 p.m. when a homeowner on Humphries Court reported that he was awoken by the noise of two men in his home who were in the process of stealing his belongings. The homeowner startled the thieves, who fled prior to the police being called.

While the police were investigating this incident, they received another call from a homeowner at a nearby residence on Cunningham Court reporting a similar crime in progress. When RCMP members arrived at that home, they found a male suspect still in the house.

The man tried to escape by jumping out a second floor window. Police pursued the man as he ran through yards and over fences. The Air 2 police helicopter also helped track the man during the chase.

The 19-year old man, who is well known to police, was eventually arrested after a lengthy chase, and will be facing multiple charges in relation to both break-and-enters.

"It is really important to call the police immediately when ever you hear or see a suspicious person or activity," said Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk in a press release. "The home owner did the right thing and called 911, which resulted in an immediate police response and the capture of a known criminal."

The Burnaby RCMP is still looking for the suspect from the Humphries Court break-and-enter.

The police are looking for a Caucasian man, approximately 5-9, with a shaved head. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie bearing a red emblem.
