Photos + Video: Dozens march through Burnaby for Black History Month

The third annual Black History Walk by Ethiopian Affairs in B.C. honoured trailblazing Burnaby politician Rosemary Brown.

Burnaby witnessed a celebration last weekend as dozens of revellers marched around Central Park and the surrounding area in honour of trailblazer Rosemary Brown.

The third annual Black History Walk took place Saturday, March 2, by the Ethiopian Affairs in B.C.

Brown was chosen by the organization as its person of recognition this year. She served as MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds from 1979 to 1986 as the first Black woman to be elected to the B.C. Legislature.

The event also commemorated the 128th anniversary of the victory of Adwa — a significant moment in Black history where Ethiopian forces defeated the Colonial invading force in 1896.

Notable attendees at the walk included Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley, Burnaby-Deer Lake MLA Anne Kang and Burnaby North MLA Janet Routledge.
