The Gilmore One condo tower in Burnaby flashed on and off at night March 18 and 19.

An under-construction condo tower in Burnaby is lighting up in unexpected ways.

Neighbours said the flickering lights began Monday night at Gilmore One, a 51-storey tower in development at the corner of Gilmore Avenue and Dawson Street.

Martin Kendell, strata president of nearby 4182 Dawson St., said the lights flashed all night – and then happened again Tuesday.

He described it like a “strobe” effect, repeatedly flashing on and off.

“It literally goes up the entire building,” he said, noting his apartment only shows two sides of the Gilmore tower.

“And then the entire top lights up. It was pretty crazy.”

He said the neighbourhood wasn’t informed about the lights beforehand, which has added to existing frustrations about a lack of communication around the Gilmore Place development’s construction.

“There’s a couple buildings that are facing head on to the building and (residents) were like, ‘What the heck’s going on here?’”

Kendell said his wife got up at 4 a.m. Tuesday night and saw the lights still flashing then.

“It’s a constant thing; it’s not periodic at all.”

The NOW requested comment from Onni Group, the tower’s developer, but did not receive a response by publication deadline.
