Burnaby's Afro-Caribbean community is set to host a free event this weekend in honour of Black History Month, celebrating culture and envisioning the future.

The Alegria Soy Cultural and Community Society is inviting the public to an evening of vibrancy, and hope, at Burnaby Hall in Edmonds (7837 Canada Way) on Saturday, Feb. 17.

A news release sent to the NOW explains the gathering will not only offer dinner and a show, but also an educational component on the pursuit of eliminating inequality, poverty and hunger.

"It's a call for change....Let's come together and create a society where everyone has equal opportunities and access to a better tomorrow.

"Explore the past, embrace the present, and co-create an equitable future for all."

Entitled "Afro Caribbean Folklore Celebration," the night will feature a multitude of performances from dancers and artists.

This includes:

  • Edmonds Las Divinas Dance Group
  • Elegancia Cubana Dance Group
  • Lili Flamenco
  • DJ Sanchez from Cuba
  • Ricardo Hernandez
  • African Masters

Alegria Soy has partnered with 17 different organizations to make the free celebration possible, set for Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m.

Registration in advance is preferred. You can visit the event's website for more.
