A vehicle fire has westbound traffic backed up on Highway 1 in Burnaby.

A vehicle fire that backed up westbound traffic on Highway 1 in Burnaby Friday morning has been cleared.

DriveBC posted to social media shortly before 8 a.m. warning drivers of a westbound vehicle that had caught on fire just before Kensington Avenue.

An update just before 9 a.m. said the centre lane had been re-opened and urged drivers to “pass with care and expect major delays.”

The vehicle fire was cleared a short time later, according to DriveBC, but drivers were warned to "expect delays as congestion remains in the area."

Acting assistant fire Chief Mark Forsberg told the NOW firefighters had been called to the highway at 7:40 a.m.

He said the vehicle, which had been pulled onto the shoulder, was "fully involved" by the time crews got there.

The vehicle's only occupant got out safely, and there were no injuries, Forsberg said.
