A federal government office has brought Gary Birch, executive director of the Burnaby-based Neil Squire Society, along to New York City to attend a United Nations conference on the rights of people with disabilities.
The Neil Squire Society is a national not-for-profit organization that has been using technology to help people with physical disabilities for the past 27 years. Birch is recognized as a global expert on the issue, and the federal government's Office for Disability Issues invited him to attend the UN conference, on from Sept. 12 to 14.
"I hope to exchange knowledge both on the successes and remaining challenges around access to technologies for people with disabilities," Birch said in a press release.
Birch, a quadriplegic, will attend a roundtable on accessibility and technology, and while he won't be speaking, he's there to network and learn more. He'll also attend an event about making technology for people with disabilities more accessible.
