At least seven Burnaby fire engines were on the scene at the Kingsway Court seniors' residence at 5560 Inman Ave. to fight a Monday afternoon fire.

The blaze broke out in a fourth-floor suite of the highrise near the corner of Thurston Street.

Cam Stockdale, Lower Mainland district supervisor for the B.C. Ambulance Service, told the Burnaby NOW that three ambulances attended to the scene and five people were treated, including two who were transported to Burnaby Hospital.

Stockdale said his crews responded to the first call just before 2 p.m., and the five seniors attended to at the scene were treated for various routine medical ailments.

Firefighters were knocking on doors in the building until about 3 p.m. to alert residents about the fire.

According to preliminary eyewitness reports, the suite was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, but it didn't take long for the fire to be put out.

Traffic in the area was snarled.
