Jon Webb knows first-hand how places like the new Quibble Creek Health and Phoenix Transition Housing Centre make a real difference for people in desperate need of a helping hand.

Phase Two of the centre was officially opened last week at 13670 94A Ave., across from Surrey Memorial Hospital, and Webb shared his story during the ceremony.

"A year ago yesterday I walked through the doors of this centre a broken man," he said.

He'd been through detox two and a half months prior, and was, in his words, in pretty rough shape. "I was almost not allowed to stay I was in such rough shape," he explained.

"I had eight Safeway bags stuffed with my belongings. I didn't even have two garbage bags to my name. I was told I was allowed two garbage bags to come with me and I didn't even have two garbage bags, so things are looking a little bit better today."

Today, Webb is working as a cook for the new centre, which has 15 short-term recovery beds and 52 post-treatment studio apartments with integrated support services operated by Phoenix Drug Alcohol Recovery and Education Society.

Up to 7,300 individuals can be served annually through its various programs.

Fraser Health operates the Sobering and Assessment Centre and Primary Care Service, as well as the Surrey Outpatient Substance Use Services, which have been relocated to the site.

The project was made possible through the partnership of the City of Surrey, the province, Fraser Health Authority and Phoenix.

"I was taught and learned how to deal with these troubles where a lot of people complain how we go over this and over that but I could see them being compared to life challenges I would face when I was through my treatment," said Webb. "I do believe we can conquer the hills of society by showing our gratitude and by giving back."
