Greens on the move
Lynne Quarmby, the Green candidate for Burnaby North-Seymour has been keeping busy. Quarmby and Andrew Weaver, the Greens’ only sitting MLA in B.C., co-hosted a talk last in North Vancouver last Friday on why the two, both scientists, decided to get into politics. The talk will include a short film, a spoken word performance and refreshments. At press time, Quarmby was also scheduled to attend a visit from federal Green leader Elizabeth May in Burnaby to talk about the party’s plan for a national housing strategy.
All-candidates’ debate
BCIT’s student association is hosting an all-candidates’ meeting on Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. for the South Burnaby riding. The event will be on the Burnaby campus, in building SE6, in the Telus Theatre, and the public is available. So far, the NDP, Liberal and Green candidates have confirmed they’re attending. Salmon concerns
Adam Pankratz, the Liberal candidate for Burnaby South, pointed to local streamkeeping efforts to hype his party’s plan for the environment. In a recent media release, the Liberals vowed to implement the Cohen Commission findings “and restore sockeye salmon stocks in the Fraser River, and reverse the $40 million that Harper cut from the federal government’s ocean science and monitoring programs.”
“Burnaby schools have been releasing salmon into local streams for years - I remember doing it in elementary at Marlborough School. The Liberal Party wants to build on the good work done by everyone and comprehensively restore salmon on a larger level,” Pankratz said in the release.
Offices opening
Burnaby North-Seymour
All of the Burnaby North-Seymour candidates have set up shop in the Heights neighbourhood, which means local voters don’t have to cross the Inlet to visit their offices.
Liberal Terry Beech is at 4684 Hastings St. Lynne Quarmby, Green, is at 4261 Hastings St. Carol Ellan Baird is at 3863 Hastings St., and ToryMike Little is at 4181 Hastings St., behind the Starbucks.
Sasha Ramnarine’s office is at 728 Twelfth Street in New Westminster, and he’s holding an opening celebration on Sunday, Aug. 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. Ramnarine is running for the Liberals in New Westminster-Burnaby. Tory candidate Grace Seear, who’s running in Burnaby South, is at 4845 Imperial St., and Liberal Adam Pankratz, also running in Burnaby South, opened his office at 4940 Kingsway.
Peter Julian, the NDP incumbent running in New Westminster Burnaby, has an office at 1192 Eighth Ave.
