Christmas is over. Time to put the artificial tree back in the basement – what’s that? You have a real tree? Well, Burnaby firefighters can help you with that.
The Burnaby Fire Fighters IAFF Local 323 is hosting its annual Christmas tree chipping event this Sunday, Jan. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1, 4867 Sperling Ave. Chipping is by donation, with proceeds going to the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society.
This year, two groups promoting green energy – CarbonSync and Diacarbon – will be recycling the chipped trees, putting a more eco-friendly twist on the event.
“We’re going to recycle the Christmas tree waste into biochar, which is charcoal, which is then added to soil,” said Burnaby firefighter Brad Major, who is also the leader of the CarbonSync team. “It’s an environmentally friendly, carbon negative way of recycling the tree.
“It’s definitely different than what anybody else is doing. It’ll be a good trial for us.”
Additionally, there will be demonstrations to raise awareness of the flammability of dry Christmas trees.
Kids and families can check out fire trucks at the hall and enjoy some hot chocolate and hotdogs.
