Burnaby RCMP Staff-Sgt. Major John Buis to be inducted into Basketball B.C. Hall of Fame

Burnaby RCMP Staff-Sgt. Major John Buis is one of seven new inductees into the Basketball B.C. Hall of Fame.

Burnaby RCMP Staff-Sgt. Major John Buis is one of seven new inductees into the Basketball B.C. Hall of Fame.

The announcement came Wednesday and another Burnaby notable, SFU women's basketball coach Bruce Langford, also will be inducted at the April 21 ceremony at the Langley Events Centre, starting at 6 p.m.

Buis is going in as a builder, along with Dan Miscisco, while Langford and Rich Goulet go in as coaches. Tracie McAra (Sibbald) is going in as a player, Dean McKinnon as an official and the 1972-73 UBC women are going in as a team.

Buis' accomplishments include 38 years with the B.C. AAA boys provincial tournament committee, including 20 years as its tournament director and 12 as assistant tournament director. Buis has also served 16 years on the Basketball B.C. board, including nine years as its president.

Buis has also represented Canada Basketball as a member of the FIBA Americas board, was inducted into the Delta Sports Hall of Fame 2010 and has also won the Basketball B.C. Special Merit award in 1996, Sport B.C. President's Award in 2001 and Canada Basketball Provincial President of the Year in 2007.

Langford's accomplishments include coaching at Hatzic and Heritage Park secondary schools, which include winning a AA provincial championship in 1994 and AAA championships in 2000 and 2001.

Since 2001, he has coached the women's basketball team at SFU, winning five CIS national championships. Nationally, he coached the u-19 girls to gold medals in 1997 and 2001, and has coached team members Joby MacKenzie, Teresa Kleindeinst (Gabriel) and Kim Smith.

McAra (Sibbald) played on three national championship teams at UVic; Goulet coached for 10 years at Burnaby's St. Thomas More Collegiate before going to Pitt Meadows, where he has coached for 33 years; McKinnon has officiated for more than 40 years; Miscisco has given more than 1,000 basketball clinics involving more than 60,000 participants since 1964; and the UBC women of 1972/73 were one of the most dominant teams ever in Canadian university basketball, finishing with a 24-1 record and a roster which included seven national team members and four future Olympians.
