Dig through the closet to find coats for kids

The annual drive to keep local children warm this winter is in full swing. Rotary Coats For Kids is an annual affair, where volunteers collect donations of new or gently used waterproof winter coats with hoods.

The annual drive to keep local children warm this winter is in full swing. Rotary Coats For Kids is an annual affair, where volunteers collect donations of new or gently used waterproof winter coats with hoods.

The coats are loaded into a van, which functions like a travelling dressing room, where kids in need can climb aboard and pick a coat they like.

Donations can be dropped off at any Burnaby Public Library branch, the South Burnaby Neighbourhood House (at 4845 Imperial St.), at The UPS Store at 7655 Edmonds St. or at local Staples stores.

The neighbourhood house is also the place to drop off cheques. For more information, call 604-431-0400 or go to burnabymetrotownrotary.org.

Get walking

Congratulations to local resident Linda Dawson for organizing Burnaby's first walk for Parkinson's research on Sept. 10.

Dawson said the event drew about 35 walkers, who raised $2,726.83.

"We did just great," said Dawson, who suffers from Parkinson's.

The money goes to the Parkinson Society of B.C., which funds research and helps people with the disease. For more on the organization, go to www. parkinson.bc.ca.

Save the date

The annual Fill a Stocking, Fulfill a Wish fundraiser for the Burnaby Christmas Bureau is on Nov. 22.

The event raises money for the bureau, which makes sure low-income families have toys for their kids and food on the table for Christmas.

Last year, the bureau helped 5,196 people by distributing more than 13,000 gifts and $63,500 in food certificates.

Keep an eye on upcoming editions of the Burnaby NOW for full details on the Christmas Bureau, run by Burnaby Community Connections.

We have a copy of Kim OK, a self-published autobiography of Lower Mainland resident Kim Ok-Ran, a business woman who immigrated to Canada from Korea.

The first person to email me with Kim OK in the subject line gets the book. It will be here at our office for the winner to pick up.
