Simon Fraser University students are one step closer to getting a brand-new, 100,000-square-foot student union building at their Burnaby campus.

The SFU Student Society signed a 20-year, $44.3-million loan agreement with Scotiabank last month and is now finalizing blueprints for the project and preparing to look for a builder.

“SFU is extremely excited that the Student Union Building is going ahead,” SFU chief facilities officer Larry Waddell stated in a press release Wednesday.

“The Simon Fraser Student Society has shown tremendous vision and leadership in promoting the project and has taken great care in involving student input to ensure that the design reflects the needs and goals of students.

“The building will not only provide a huge improvement to the spaces and services available for students, but will also be a significant and prominent piece of architecture which will greatly enhance the Burnaby campus.”

Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in summer 2016 and be completed in 2018.

The new student union building will include a club centre, gamer’s lounge and napping room as well as student meeting rooms, lounges and offices.
