The University Highland Elementary kindergarten class of 2015 will get a chance to reminisce about the good old days when they move on to high school eight years from now.
The school buried a time capsule this month that will be opened in 2023, when the current kindergarteners graduate from elementary school.
Each University Highland classroom – 11 in all – contributed items, including drawn portraits of all the school teachers, salmon habitat preservation techniques, glass art, paintings, press clippings and soccer balls.
Several classes also included information about Terry Fox, having recently completed the annual Terry Fox run.
The time capsule event Oct. 14 marked the school’s five-year anniversary.
The celebration was also an acknowledgement of the UniverCity community’s 10-year anniversary and the 50th anniversary of Simon Fraser University.
Green catches on
A student-led green initiative that started at Alpha Secondary School has branched out into two local elementary schools.
The Green Events Program – started by Alpha Grade 12 student Tomas Lang when he was in Grade 10 – promotes a “reduce before recycling” approach.
It’s designed to cut waste at school events, like meetings, grad parties and barbecues, with reusable event-material libraries, including ceramic dishes, metal utensils and decorations.
Over the last three years, the program has loaned out almost 7,000 reusable plates, utensils and cups for Alpha events, diverting waste from the landfill and saving the school about $300.
With $5,000 raised through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign and matching funds from Ashoka Canada, the program has also recently donated $700 worth of reusable events materials each to Inman and Capitol Hill elementary schools.

Family-fun fundraiser
St. Michael’s School hosts a Walkathon fundraiser on Oct. 25, featuring pony rides, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre’s Starlab digital portable planetarium, martial arts sessions a concession and more.
Participants have the option of starting the Walkathon any time between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The goal is to raise $20,000 for building costs and future seismic upgrades at the kindergarten-to-Grade 7 independent school.
St. Michael’s, at 9387 Holmes St., has 235 students and opened in 1958.
