Local MP says Notley 'cautious' on Kinder Morgan pipeline

While Albertans are basking in an orange glow, following the NDP’s historic victory, Burnaby MP Kennedy Stewart is weighing premier-designate Rachel Notley’s words on the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

While Albertans are basking in an orange glow, following the NDP’s historic victory, Burnaby MP Kennedy Stewart is weighing premier-designate Rachel Notley’s words on the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

Notley has said Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline is “not the right decision,” but she said Kinder Morgan’s  proposed expansion for the Trans Mountain pipeline “continues to be worthy of discussion because the route there has been established and has been fairly effective.”

Stewart, an NDP MP who has been a key opponent to Kinder Morgan’s new pipeline, wasn’t too concerned about Notley’s comments.

“I think Premier Notely was being cautious. She’s the premier of Alberta, so they’re keen to export oil,” he told the NOW. “We’ve heard that kind of comment from a number of people: They’re interested, they’ll look into it, … I don’t see her appearing in any Trans Mountain ads anytime soon.”

“She said the same thing about Energy East,” he added. “If you’re a brand new premier, you would leave all your options (open).”

Stewart said the Alberta’s NDP and the federal New Democrats discuss things, but there’s no cross-Canada consensus on policy.
