Nick Offerman comes to town

“Don’t start chasing applause and acclaim. That way lies madness.”

While Nick Offerman’s well-known character, Ron Swanson, advised his Parks and Recreation colleague Leslie Knope to avoid the spotlight, Offerman himself is garnering much applause and acclaim these days.

The comedian has recently published his second book, Gumption: Relighting the Torch of Freedom with America’s Gutsiest Troublemakers, and will be signing copies at Metropolis at Metrotown this month.

The signing is on a first-come, first-served basis at Chapters on Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m.

Copies of the book must be purchased at an Indigo, Chapters or Coles store, and those who want their copies signed must bring a receipt.

Former SFU Community Trust head honoured

Michael Geller has been a writer, architect, property developer and urban planner over the years, with many connections to Simon Fraser University and UniverCity.

Soon, Geller will be honoured for this body of work at a ceremony at the Richmond Country Club.

The Building Minds event is set for Sept. 1 and is being sponsored by ORT, an international educational non-profit organization.

“I was literally shocked when I was approached, but very much honoured,” Geller said in a press release. “My first thought was of all the other people who are probably more deserving. But, that being said, I agreed to do it because I am familiar with the good work ORT does, particularly in the field of education.”

Geller was president and CEO of the SFU Community Trust, and oversaw the planning of the first phase of UniverCity. He is currently an adjunct faculty member of SFU’s centre for sustainable community development.
