Remembrance Day ceremonies on in Burnaby

Place a flag Burnaby’s George Derby Centre is hosting its annual flag fundraiser for Remembrance Day. Visitors to the centre can make a donation for a small, Canadian flag to stick in the centre’s lawn, in honour of Canada’s veterans.

There are a few Remembrance Day events on in Burnaby this Nov. 11, including ceremonies at local cenotaphs and the Korean War Memorial.

Place a flag

Burnaby’s George Derby Centre is hosting its annual flag fundraiser for Remembrance Day. Visitors to the centre can make a donation for a small, Canadian flag to stick in the centre’s lawn, in honour of Canada’s veterans. The campaign kicked off Thursday, Nov. 5 with students from Cariboo Hill Secondary and Armstrong Elementary helping place the flags on the lawn. There are 5,000 flags ready to go. Two years ago, the event raised $5,000 for the centre. George Derby Centre, at 7550 Cumberland St., is home to roughly 300 seniors. Two thirds are veterans from the Second World War and the Korean War.

North Cenotaph

North Burnaby residents can set aside some time to remember this Wednesday. There will be Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 11, starting at 10:30 a.m., with a procession leaving from the Safeway parking lot at 4440 Hastings St. The march ends at the North Burnaby cenotaph in Confederation Park at Willingdon Avenue and Penzance Drive. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

South Cenotaph

Meanwhile in the south of the city, close to Metrotown, there will be a simultaneous ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m. at Firehall No. 3 at 6511 Marlborough Ave.People will then march to the South Burnaby Cenotaph in Bonsor Park, at Imperial Street and Nelson Avenue. The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

George Derby ceremony

The George Derby Centre is hosting its own ceremony for residents, many of whom are veterans and seniors who may not be able to get out to the cenotaph ceremonies. The George Derby event is on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Residents’ friends, family members and nearby neighbours are welcome to attend. Senator Yonah Martin is expected to attend.

Korean War Memorial

There will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Korean War Memorial in Burnaby’s Central Park on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 3:30 to 4 p.m. The Korean War Commemorative Alliance organizes the annual event. Participants will have a chance to place a poppy on a wreath during the ceremony. The memorial is on the west side of the park. The memorial, known as the Ambassador of Peace, has been in place since 2007.
