TELUS will begin incorporating 90 per cent of homes and businesses in Burnaby to its fibre optic network this summer. The $150 million investment project is set for completion before the end of 2019.

“Since 2013, TELUS has made fibre optic investments across B.C., Alberta and parts of eastern Quebec,” says TELUS media contact Liz Sauvé. “Burnaby is the latest community to receive the build.”

TELUS stated in a March press release that “the gigabit-enabled TELUS PureFibre network is among the most advanced communications infrastructure available in the world today, enabling connected residents to immediately take advantage of dramatically faster Internet speeds of up to 150 megabits per second, while interested businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and institutions can access even more speed and capacity.”

“Direct fibre connection unleashes infinite possibilities,” says TELUS executive vice-president Tony Geheran. “This investment will dramatically improve Internet speed and capacity for residents and businesses in all corners of Burnaby, as well as health care facilities and schools.”

“We are thrilled that Burnaby citizens and businesses will soon enjoy the significant benefits of direct fibre connection,” says Mayor Derek Corrigan. “As home to BCIT, SFU and a tremendous wealth of knowledge-based industry leaders, Burnaby’s continued economic prosperity is closely linked to its ability to offer the highest-quality Internet connectivity.  This investment by TELUS will ensure that we do so, while also enabling our citizens to access all of the broadband applications and services on which we all now rely.”

The investment in Burnaby is part of TELUS’s $4.5 billion B.C. investment project between 2016 and 2019. The March press release issued by TELUS stated the project will not cost taxpayers.
