Three-quarters of the year's shortest month is over already, so it's time to get out and enjoy some new things to do in Burnaby. We're continuing
with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend, and this week, there's a good mix of activities in the city.
1 Get attending the South Burnaby Neighbourhood House Ninth Annual Diamond Ball fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Firefighters' Club Banquet and Conference Centre at 6515 Bonsor Ave.
The theme of this year's event is Under Sea Fantasy, with entertainment provided by Sway, a tribute to Michael Buble, starring Adam Lucas. Cocktails are at 6: 30 p.m. and dinner at 7: 30 p.m.
There's also a silent and live auction and the popular diamond raffle draw.
Tickets are $100 each or a table of 10 for $900. For tickets, call 604-431-0400.
2 Get buying on Saturday, Feb. 23 for the garage sale at the South Burnaby United Church at 7591 Gray Ave., running from 9 a.m. to noon.
This event is sponsored by the As One That Serves men's club, with all proceeds going to worthy charitable causes.
3 Get acquainted with seniors on Sunday, Feb. 24 for a Carmen Miranda-themed tea, featuring a performance by popular entertainer Colleen Durdon, tasty treats and a fun atmosphere.
The event is at the Confederation Seniors Centre at 4585 Albert St. from 1: 30 to 3 p.m. Advance tickets are $6 for Confederation seniors members and $7 for other senior guests.
4 Get celebrating on Sunday, Feb. 24 for a Lantern Festival at the Tian-Jin Temple at 3426 Smith Ave.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Spread some luck by enjoying great food, creating your very own lantern, solving riddles for prizes and other festive activities for the whole family at this free event. For more info, call 604-568-9980.

The city is now accepting nominations for the Kushiro Cup and local residents are encouraged to nominate an outstanding Burnaby resident who has given outstanding voluntary service to the community in the cultural, recreational or non-elected civic arena. Submissions, including a resume of the candidate and names and contact information of the nominators, are being accepted until Monday, March 4 at the office of the city clerk, 4949 Canada Way, V5G 1M2, by fax at 604-294-7537 or via email to email@example.com.
