Top 6 things to do this weekend in Burnaby

Outdoor VSO concert, free bike tour, streamkeeping and more
HUB bike tour
Join the Hub crew for a free bike tour in Burnaby this weekend.
  1. Head out for a bike ride with the Burnaby chapter of HUB this Sunday, July 12. The cycling group is leading a free, two-hour bike tour on the Central Valley Greenway and the Lake City loop. The rides are fair weather only, and it may rain on Sunday, so keep that in mind. Participants must have a helmet and a bell on their bike, and be sure to pack water and a snack. Info: bikehub.ca.
  2. Kick back in Deer Lake Park on Sunday, July 12 for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s free outdoor concert, on from 7 to 9 p.m. The show will include light, popular classics. Since the grass in front of the stage fills up quickly, we recommend arriving early with a blanket and a picnic to stake out a decent spot before the crowds arrive. Bear in mind, it is supposed to rain this weekend, but we’ve been assured the show will go on unless there are torrential downpours. Deer Lake Park is at 6450 Deer Lake Ave. Consider alternative transportation (transit, cabs, cycling, for instance) to avoid parking headaches as space is very limited.
  3. Pull out your knitting needles and join the friendly Knit2gether crew at Tommy Douglas library this Saturday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This popular knitting club meets regularly on the second Saturday of the month. There will be complimentary tea, but feel free to bring cookies to share. All skill levels are welcome. There will also be needles and yarn for people interested in trying knitting or crocheting for the first time. The library is at 7311 Kingsway.
  4. Learn how to protect local waterways at a free Uncover Your Creeks workshop on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to noon in Jim Lorimer Park. Participants will learn about the watershed ecology, water quality monitoring, invasive species management and care for native plants. Evergreen, a Canadian environmental group, runs these free workshops. Evergreen will provide refreshments, gloves and tools, but be sure to bring boots, sunscreen, work clothes and something to wear in the event of rain. Jim Lorimer Park is close to Gilmore SkyTrain station. Info: http://www.evergreen.ca.
  5. Check out the rugby action at the BLRC Lighthouse Sevens Tournament at Burnaby Lake this Saturday, July 12. The tournament runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and the finals are from 3 to 5 p.m. The Burnaby Lake Rugby Club is hosting the tourney and defending their titles from last year. There will be a beer garden, a barbecue and entertainment. Info: burnabylakerugby.com.
  6. Take a historical tour at Forest Lawn Memorial with local historian Maurice Guibord on Sunday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to noon. Register by calling 604-299-7711. Admission is free. Meet at the cemetery entrance at 3789 Royal Oak Ave.
