[UPDATE] Pedestrian killed in early morning collision

Burnaby RCMP say Cariboo Road has reopened

Police shut down a section of Cariboo Road after a "serious pedestrian involved collision" at the bottom of Cariboo Hill Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at 7:10 a.m. Police say a vehicle travelling northbound on Cariboo struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a 15-year-old girl, died at the scene.

Multiple emergency response vehicles attended the area just south of the Highway 1 overpass.

The victim is believed to be an international student and not attending school in Burnaby.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating, according to RCMP.

It appears the collision occured close to a crosswalk and bus stop, but police say it is too early to know what caused the collision.

At 2:30 p.m., Burnaby RCMP reopened Cariboo Road between 16th Avenue and Stormont Avenue.

Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 and ask to speak to traffic services.

Burnaby RCMP responded to three other incidents Wednesday morning involving pedestrians and cyclists hit by vehicles.

"Pedestrian crashes spike dramatically in the fall and winter months because of the shorter daylight hours and poor weather. Burnaby RCMP urges pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to remain alert in low light and wet weather conditions. Pedestrians should wear reflective clothing, use crosswalks and intersections and make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street. Drivers, please be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in early mornings and after sunset," notes a press release from RCMP.
