Dear Editor

Voters who attended a Burnaby North-Seymour all-candidates meeting on Monday evening at SFU enjoyed a lively debate among Carol Baird Ellan, Lynne Quarmby, and Terry Beech. The Conservative candidate, Mike Little, was represented by an empty chair – again. It is vital that voters in the Burnaby North-Seymour riding be represented by a person who listens to the concerns of the citizens and represents those concerns in Ottawa. Mr. Little has significantly damaged his credibility by refusing to attend four all-candidates meetings (so far).

The all-candidates meeting at SFU focused on the environment – in particular, the urgent need to take action to minimize the threat of climate change. Featured at the meeting were two acknowledged experts in the environmental field. There is no doubt that the impacts of climate change will be profound. There is also no doubt that doing little to mitigate the effects of climate change is not a viable option for the future.

If we choose to be represented by a prime minister who is committed to the expansion of the fossil fuels industry in Canada and an MP who is afraid to present his positions to the electorate, we will be facing a perilous future.

If you wish to be the representative of the citizens of Burnaby North-Seymour, you need to attend all-candidates meetings and show that you have the courage of your convictions.

Larry Myers, Burnaby
