LETTERS: Why you should support Julian

Dear Editor: Many people say the NDP platform is "too idealistic." My issue with this stance is that you HAVE to have hope, and you HAVE to have vision in order to accomplish anything with purpose.

Dear Editor:

Many people say the NDP platform is "too idealistic." My issue with this stance is that you HAVE to have hope, and you HAVE to have vision in order to accomplish anything with purpose. Of course, this hope and this vision must be complemented with reasonable expectations, proper planning, and honest work in order to come to realization.

The Conservative campaign does not bother with any of this. Their promises are based on fear, hopelessness, and the bubble-wrapping of resources (such as the oil sands, which is draining while taking the environment with it, and your personal income, which is only depleting in comparison to inflation). The Liberals, while they aren't so obviously self-serving, do not have as clear of a vision. Yes, the NDP is promising a lot, but their promises, if fulfilled, will be of great benefit to the general population - in some cases, even life-saving.

There are no absolutes in this campaign. Yes, the NDP may fail to deliver on some of their promises. But the Conservatives have been failing and lying to you for nine years, and voting them in again will only allow them to continue. The NDP is fighting for a better quality of life in Canada, a quality of life that should be accessible to all residents of this country. Why NOT choose to hope?

Because of the new borders that have been drawn up, Peter Julian is no longer the NDP candidate of my home riding in South Burnaby. But, I have fond memories of the times I got to witness live political debates at my high school, Burnaby South Secondary School. First of all, I am very thankful that such debates were even organized at my high school, as I'm not sure this is something that occurs across Canada. Secondly, given the fact that minors can't vote, it was fantastic that candidates contributed their time to discuss issues in front of students who have limited opportunities to be politically engaged. I can say without a doubt that these debates personally impacted me and raised my political interests. I also remember many of my peers leaving the auditorium, commenting about who the clear winner of these debates was: Peter Julian.

His demeanor was respectful yet passionate, and he always had measured, well-reasoned responses to any questions put forth by students and candidates. As far as I can tell, based on what I've read, heard, and seen on TV, he hasn't changed. Despite having to work under the Conservative government for nearly a decade, he is still here, he is still running, he is still working, he is still hoping, and he is still honourably representing his constituents. I am very rarely a proud person, but I am proud to say he has served as my MP during the Conservative reign, and I sincerely hope those of you who are in his riding will lend him your support.
