The Burnaby Lions Pee Wee football team scored early and often on Sept. 9 as they beat the Vancouver Trojans 33-0 and took their record to 2-0 on the season.

The Lions had opened with a 12-12 tie against the Richmond Raiders a week earlier, but because the Raiders used two ineligible players, the Lions were given the forfeit win a week later.

The Lions were led by quarterback B.J. Clarke, a recent arrival from Minnesota, who had one touchdown, and shifty scatback Michael Simone, who had three scores for the Lions. Elias Gonzales rounded out the scoring for Burnaby.

"B.J. has developed beyond his years," said Lions coach Mike Leland. "He's like a coach on the field and he's only 11 years old."

Leland also had similar praise for his running back.

"Simone is just a flat-out speed demon," said Leland. "He can fly and he's a great athlete even though he's tiny."

The defense, led by Matteo Tack and A.J. Chol, did not allow a point against.

"These kids went 0-12 last year, but this is a new team," said Leland. "We've got some great leadership on the field and the kids are really responding to one another. It's fun to watch."
