The Cariboo Hill Chargers and Burnaby South Rebels were big winners at the Burnaby/ NewWestminster high school boys' soccer semi-finals.

Justin Dhaliwal scored three goals, including an emphatic 5-0 strike from outside the 30-yard box, to lead Cariboo to a 5-0 victory over Burnaby North at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West on Monday.

South got single goals from five individual players in a similar 5-0 scoreline over Byrne Creek.

Both Cariboo and South held 2-0 leads at halftime against their opponents.

International student Luiz Benfica chipped in with a goal in the first half for Cariboo, while Kirk Menezes tallied the east Burnaby school's 3-0 goal.

Dhaliwal showed his prowess with a pair of late goals to earn the hat trick - the first with the left foot and the final score with a right-footed ripper that tore into the top corner of the net late in the contest.

"South is a good team. . It'll be a tough game," said Dhaliwal. "But we beat them twice (in the regular season) and we'll beat them a third time."

In the other semifinal, South took an early first-half lead on goals by Nick Leonard and Zsolt Csonk before team captain Matt Shannik put the game away for the Rebels with the team's third goal of the game.

Tyus Batiste, on a free kick, and Nick Hernandes, with a late second-half counter, also scored for South.

"We're expecting a good battle," said Shannik after the game. "We're going to leave it all out there and show (Cariboo) that the last two games were lucky and that we're the best team in Burnaby."

The two teams will meet in the BNW final at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West today (Wednesday). Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Next month, the Chargers will play North Shore No. 1 for a berth into the AA provincial championships.

South will face North Shore champion West Vancouver in the provincial AAA qualifier at Burnaby Lake on Nov. 6.
