The Northwest Giants increased their lead in the B.C. major midget hockey league following a weekend sweep over the Thompson Blazers on all-star weekend at the Langley Events Centre.

Gavin Gould had a breakout game for the Giants, scoring two goals and adding two assists, in an 8-2 win over the Blazers on Saturday. Gould, who had just one goal in a previous dozen games, sparked a four-goal Giants' third period with back-to-back tallies early in the stanza.

Brandon Del Grosso of New Westminster and Jansen Harkins also had four-point games for the winners.

Del Grosso collected his 13th goal of the year, while Harkins had four assists.

Jarid Lukosevicius also garnered a pair of goals and one helper. Anthony Conti had a goal and two assists.

On Sunday, Colton Kerfoot and Conti both scored twice to help the Giants post a 6-1 win. Quinn Thompson and Harkins, with his team-high 33rd and 34th helpers this season, had a pair of assists apiece.

"I don't think there is a team like us that can match our depth. We have the skill and in gritty games we have the size and strength. The team was built with that in mind," said first-year head coach Clint Thornton.

The wins boosted the Giants record to 26-2-2.

But Thornton maintains the team's goal is not about matching the five-time league champion's earlier records, but preparing for what possibly lies ahead in Alberta in the lead-up to the Telus Cup.

Cariboo moved into a second-place tie with the Okanagan Rockets that managed just one point in a series with the lowly Fraser Valley Thunderbirds. Cariboo took three of four points against the Greater Vancouver Canadians last week. Both teams are tied with 45 points to date.

This weekend, the Giants are in Langley on Saturday for a date with the Valley West Hawks. The two teams take to the ice on Sunday at the Burnaby Winter Club. Game time is 9: 30 a.m.

All-star result

Northwest Giants Zach Landon, Eric Margo and goalie Bo Didur shared in Team White's 6-2 victory over Team Red in the annual B.C. major midget all-star game at the Langley Events Centre on Jan. 18.

Giants Malik Kaila, Jarid Lukosevicius and Todd Cole, with one goal, played on Team Red.
