The St. Thomas More Knights completed a near-perfect Grade 8 girls' basketball season, capturing the school's first-ever B.C. high school championships.

The first-year Knights won the landmark provincial title following a 45-24 victory over Handsworth in the gold-medal final at Pitt Meadows Secondary on March 10.

Great performances were turned in by Sam Landolt, Nadine Stewart and Stephanie von Riedemann in the championship final.

STM advanced to the final following a 43-21 win over Fraser Heights in the semifinals.

The Burnaby independent opened with a resounding 77-7 win over host Pitt Meadows.

Zion Corrales-Nelson was named the tournament MVP following the competition. Corrales-Nelson had a superstar outing against Lord Tweedsmuir in Game 2 of the tourney, hitting six straight three-pointers in STM's 54-28 win.

Nikko Sahagun and player of the game in the final Hannah Hieltjes were both named to the all-tournament first team.

"The thing we're most proud of is our defence," said STM coach John Spanjers. "The girls played really good defence.

The Knights finished the year with an impressive 30-1 record.
