Simon Fraser University remained in top spot in NCAA Division II men's soccer standings after shutout wins over two conference lesser lights last week.

The No. 4 nationally ranked Clan blanked the University of Mary 5-0 at home last Thursday before shutting out Sioux Falls 60 at Terry Fox Field on Saturday, bringing the team's overall record to 12-1.

"We've been working a lot on finishing in practice, but we still have a lot to work on," said Colby Liston, who potted two goals in the Saturday encounter.

Ryan Dhillon also counted a pair, while Hide Ozawa recorded his second straight shutout and fourth goose egg this season.

SFU got the eventual game-winner against Sioux Falls in the seventh minute of the Great Northwest confererence matchup from Michael Winter off a cross from Carlo Basso.

Seven minutes later, freshman Colin Jacques made it 2-0 on a rebound off a Justin Wallace shot on goal.

The win moved the Clan to 8-1 in conference play, three points up on second-place Northwest Nazarene. SFU also tops the West region in a national soccer coaches poll.

As of last week, the Clan was the No. 1 Div. II team in the nation with 42 total goals scored and averaging 3.82 goals per game.

On Thursday, Winter, who had two goals and four assists last week, again opened the scoring early with his third goal of the year.

Basso sparked a big second half, knotting his 10th goal of the year in the 54th minute of play.

Wallace, Jovan Blagojevic and Renan Rebelatto, with his first goal of the season, all scored late in the game to power the Clan to the win.

This week SFU will head to Idaho for a pair of tough conference road games, including a matchup against Northwest Nazarene.

The Clan's final home game will be on Nov. 4 at Terry Fox Field against middle-table Western Washington.

Women still struggling

The Clan women's team continued to struggle, dropping a pair of conference matches last week.

The 1-12 squad lost 1-0 to Western Oregon at home on Thursday before going on to lose its 10th consecutive Great Northwest matchup 2-0 to Saint Martin's on Saturday.

Burnaby's Marissa Di Lorenzo had perhaps the best scoring chance in the twin losses, crossing the ball into the box in the 25th minute against the Saints that just missed the toe of a Clan player.

Amanda Gilliland made six stops in each of the Clan's two losses.
