Nick Erakovic opened play in the men's 3.5 singles at the New Westminster Tennis Tournament at Tipperary Park last weekend.

Sarah Tamura posted a personal best in the free program following a poor start at the International Skating Union junior Grand Prix in Riga, Latvia last week.

The 14-year-old Burnaby figure skater jumped from 21st to 13th place overall following the eighth-best long program in the 32-skater field.

Tamura finished with a personal-best total score of 128.49 after scoring a career-high 93.62 in the final free skate program.

“I had a disastrous short program and I wanted to bounce back from that,” said Tamura in a Skate Canada press release. “I wanted to go out there and skate my long program like I do every day in training, and I achieved that.”

Maria Sotskova of Russia won the GP event with a score of 184.45.

C-1 Canoe finalist

Diana Tam made the finals in three events at the Canadian sprint canoe/kayak championships in Ottawa last weekend.

Tam placed sixth in both the C-1 junior women’s 500 and 1,000 metres canoe finals.

The Burnaby Lake Canoe and Kayak Club paddler was disqualified in the 200m race final.

Hana Ronayne took part in the under-17 women’s C-1 6,000m, finishing 23rd overall.
