Burnaby summer swim clubs medal at B.C.s

The Burnaby Mountain Mantas claimed city bragging rights at the 57th B.C. Summer Swimming Championships in Victoria last weekend.

The North Burnaby swim club placed fourth in the overall team aggregate, almost 50 points ahead of city rival Burnaby Barracudas in the swimming events.

Simon Fraser region champion Coquitlam won the overall team title over White Rock.

The Mantas got gold-medal swims from five individual clubbers, while earning another three in the relays, including a new B.C. meet record in the Division 5 girls’ 200-metre medley.

Sayla Briggs and Lauryn Sartori, along with Div. 4 call-ups Hannah Cui and Elva Yu combined for a record 2:11.36 clocking in the team medley.

The girls’ foursome also won the Div. 5 200m free relay.

Briggs, who won both the 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, also claimed a silver medal with the Simon Fraser regional team in the medley. Sartori earned a bronze medal in the 100m breast.

Cui, who placed second in the Div. 4 girls’ 100m freestyle and third in the 50m sprint, and Yu, a double finalist in freestyle, also took home a second-place medal in the regional relay.

Zachary Zhao won three individual O Category 2 races for the Mantas, taking a silver in the 50m free and bronze in 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley.

The Mantas also got multi-medal swims from May Li, Lauren Swistak and Bryan Yu.

Li won two gold in the Div. 8 100m butterfly and back. Swistak had a silver in the 100m free and a bronze in the 100m fly.

The pair also shared a bronze on the Simon Fraser medley relay team.

Yu placed first in the Div. 6 boys’ 100m fly and second in the 200m IM. He also won bronze with the region relay.

Emma Hwang and Jadon Tsang both won individual gold in their respective Div. 3 50m breast events.

Hwang also shared relay bronze with Taryn-Jessica Tseng, Keira Wong and Megan Kao in the medley.

Tsang and teammates Armaan Basi, Samuel Kim and Kevin Wei won the boys’ medley relay.

Peter Huang won a silver medal in Div. 2 boys’ 50m back, while Keenan Elliott was a silver medallist in the 100m fly in Div. 8.

Huang earned a bronze with teammate Christopher Ng in the regional medley.

Elliott and Vincent Chung, a bronze medallist in the 100m fly, placed third in the regional relay.

 Elton Lai also won an individual bronze medal.

Sean Li, Alex Shen, Derek Shi and Sean Leong won silver in the Div. 4 boys’ medley relay. Li and Shi also teamed for bronze on the Simon Fraser relay.

Bryan Cheung, Louisa Tsang and Sophie Ng also made individual swim finals.

Div. 1 Dynamos

First-year swimmers proved big winners for the Burnaby Barracudas.

Ashley Ko and Amy Kang won six of the club’s 21 individual medals.

Ko topped all Burnaby swimmers, winning four Division 1 races, including the 50- and 100-metre freestyle, 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley.

Ko also shared gold with clubmates Kang, Amy Zhu and Natalia Blazevic in the 200m medley and record-setting freestyle relay.

Ko, Kang and Zhu also teamed up for a third relay gold medal with the Simon Fraser regional team in the 200m medley.

Kang picked up a pair of runner-up medals in the 50m backstroke and 100m free. Zhu made final swims in four individual races, while Blazevic had a final swim in the 50m breaststroke.

Paul Orogo was another medal-winning Div. 1 Barracuda swimmer.

Orogo won the boys’ 50m back, placed second in the 50 and 100m free and was third in the 100m IM.

Orogo also anchored the boys’ freestyle relay team of Fernando Lu, Kenny Dang and Wilbur Ruckman-Utting to first place.

Lu, who made finals in four disciplines including a bronze in the 50m back, shared a silver medal with Orogo on the regional medley relay team.

Cameron Dickson won four gold medals, including a pair of freestyle races, in the O Category 2 division for the South Burnaby club.

Garrett Yeo also had a multi-medal weekend for the ’Cudas, winning three silver medals in Div. 5 boys’ 100m back and breast and 200m IM.

Yeo earned a gold in the medley relay and a silver in the free with Nicholas Tran, Edward Wong and Kurtis Li. Tran also picked up a bronze medal in the 100m free.

Yeo also shared a second gold with Li in the regional relay.

Leo Shen also picked up an individual gold for the ’Cudas in the Div. 7 boys’ 100m breast.

Div. 7 boys’ Randy Ho, Ricky Dang, Brady Liu and Rowan Cheung earned a pair of silver relay medals.

Ho, Dang and Shen also won gold with the Simon Fraser medley team.

The Div. 3 team of Conlin Duong, Cayden Liang, Jason Cao and Ivan Phung took silver in the free relay.

Duong, Liang, who won an individual silver in the 50m breast, and Phung also teamed with Justin Lee for a bronze in the medley relay.

Liang and the Mantas’ Jadon Tsang teamed up for a gold with the Simon Fraser medley relay.

Other Barracuda medallists included Anastasia Cimiliuc winning silver in the Div. 2 girls’ 50m back and Jakub Vincalek taking bronze in the Div. 7 100m breast.

Ronan and Bree Livesay, Alexa Tran, Markus Wong, Edward Wong and Emi Wong also made final swims for the Barracudas.
